A Bit of British Music

On Saturday Kent played cornet with Brass Band Northwest at the gazebo in Leavenworth. Brass Band Northwest is a British Brass Band. I have played Eb alto horn with them in the past, but decided to watch from the audience this time. The temperature was reaching 85* and felt so good on my back. It was enjoyable to relax while listening to the band play and do some people watching! It was your average Saturday in Leavenworth... hundreds of ice cream licking tourists wandering through the stores, viewing the art show and watching their kids play on the large blow-up play gyms and climbing wall.

Do these guys get paid?! I'm really not sure what their job was... other than having their photo taken and just hanging out.

Kent playing in the band (2nd cornet over). After the concert we went to Steve and Kristin's house for a BBQ and Brooke was oooh'ed and awe'd over!

Even with Kent's bad head cold he was off to his second gig of the day at Ohme Gardens. I guess it was a wine tasting evening with music by the Wenatchee Big Band. We stayed home and played on the floor :) Brooke is so much more alert now (5 weeks old!). She giggled a little bit last night and is smiling a few times a day. It makes her parents feel sooo wonderful.

Heart Check

Today we had a doctor's appointment to check on Brooke's heart. She has a very slight heart murmur that we wanted to check on. The doctors from Children's Hospital (Seattle) travel to Wenatchee with their machine to check on patients here. The ultrasoundist was so gentle that Brooke slept through the entire thing! Last time she had an ultrasound she screamed bloody-murder until she practically lost her voice! Overall the doctor said everything looked great. The only thing he wants to check up on is a ventricular septal defect (VSD) which is a small hole between the ventricles. He said that it is the most common cause of children's heart murmurs and the least treated. Most likely it will close and we won't have to worry about it. Adults with a murmur like hers have no problems. Great news and I'm so glad we didn't have to drive to Seattle!

One Month Check-up

Last night Kent was exhausted from work, Brooke had been awake almost all day long and was very tired, and I had the same headache from the morning... Kent and Brooke took a nap on the couch for an hour and a half while I read a book in the rocking chair... (wait, I thought I was supposed to be the one sleeping!?!). Pretty exciting group around here!

Brooke had her one month doctor's appointment today at the East Wenatchee Clinic. She weighed 7lbs and was 19" long. Even though she is still very small she is gaining weight perfectly! This is makes us feel so good that she is growing at the right pace. She has passed up Annie's birthweight and now is almost as big as when Aunty Caitlin was born! She is not even CLOSE to Kent's birthweight (9lbs+)!

One funny thing happened at the doctors appointment that I feel I have to share... (sorry for the graphic nature of the following). I set Brooke down on the examining table for the doctor to look her over. We took off her diaper to examine the lower region and all of a sudden "SQUIRT!" out came projectile #2! The doctor leaped out of the way and just missed it from going on his shirt! I have found out that when it comes to bodily fluids and babies... sometimes you just have to laugh!

Chelan County Fair

Today we visited the Chelan County Fair at the Cashmere Fairgrounds. We especially enjoyed the displays of fruit, veggies, quilts and arts & crafts.

The quilt above was made with all flannel. We thought the animals around the border and the cabin made this quilt really nice.

We liked how the quilt above had some references to local schools and the railroad. It's hard to see in the photo, but there were also patches and buttons that added a special touch.

Kent liked the quilt square above because of it's 3D nature.

We enjoyed these two paintings which won "best of show".

Being from Southeast Alaska, we didn't get a lot of opportunities to visit fairs. I think this is the reason we love the animal aspect of fairs. Today we happened to see the costume competition... the following photos need no explanation!

An Evening in Leavenworth

Caitlin and I decided to drive down to Leavenworth for the evening. Leavenworth was buzzing with tourists visiting for the weekend. We had a great bowl of soup and turkey sandwich at The Soup Cellar and then the best handmade chocolates from Schocolat.

Brooke is four weeks old today! We can't believe that she will be a month old in three days. Now we understand when people say it goes really quickly!
